A Raisin in the Sun - first look

The trailer is out for the ABC movie of A Raisin in the Sun. Gotta admit, it looks good! Say what you want about Sean Combs, but if his involvement makes people tune in who otherwise wouldn't, then more power to him. We all know it's all about Phylicia anyway. And hey, Puffy was okay in Monster's Ball.

So excited for Passing Strange

Passing Strange, which I saw twice at the Public, is in rehearsals for their Broadway run at the Belasco. Like Spring Awakening did last season, this "musical" has the potential to take what was cool and intriguing Off-Broadway and pump it up to explosiveness in a big Broadway house. I am so pumped about this show, and my excitement grows exponentially with everything that creator/star Stew has to say about it:

"When I read about Shakespeare with people standing up and yelling at the stage, that reminds me more of a rock club than what I see in some of these stiff air-conditioned theatres. And maybe we are in some way connecting back to an energy that theatre must have had. Theatre must have been way more rock-n-roll at some point.

"Maybe we're not bringing in a rock energy — maybe we're bringing back theatre energy. We're trying to bring that spontaneity we thrive off in the rock-n-roll world and hope that people get that and say, 'Oh yeah, that was like this tonight, and it's not gonna be like this tomorrow.' I hope they can feel that."
You can listen to songs from the show on their myspace page.

Heath Ledger is dead

Oh my god! PEOPLE, DRUGS ARE BAD! Seriously, first Brad Renfro and now Heath Leger. Very sad.

Update: Sleeping pills found on the scene indicates that my "drugs are bad" response might have been premature, and this was probably not a simple case of way too much partying. In any case, whatever the reason was for him taking all those pills, it's just so fucking sad to have lost one of the most skillfull film actors of a generation.

Huge Stars!

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT: Old Springs Pike is about to be HUGE. These guys are about to EXPLODE, people! Watch this clip of their new jam at Joe's Pub, I dare you to disagree with me. I double dog dare you!

why is it so upsetting to me?

I have to just come out and talk about this. Did you SEE Katie Holmes on Letterman?!? Her face looks insane, and then there's the way she speaks, which seems like she's gone completely bananas.

The whole thing freaks me out. At moments, she almost looks like Lisa Rinna! Scientologists are crazy!!

Heinous Television

I can not watch one more second of Grey's Anatomy. It is so despicably inane, desperately clinging to the threads of storylines that once existed. There is literally no subtext in *any* of the dialogue, at all. For shame.

And from what I've seen, Cashmere Mafia might be worse.

Brantley hates The Little Mermaid

Oh dear.

Loved the shoes. Loathed the show... O.K., I exaggerate. I didn’t like the shoes all that much.

And the real humdinger:

Directed by Francesca Zambello, this “Little Mermaid” burdens its performers with ungainly guess-what-I-am costumes (by Tatiana Noginova) and a distracting set (by George Tsypin) awash in pastels gone sour and unidentifiable giant tchotchkes that suggest a Luau Lounge whipped up by an acid-head heiress in the 1960s. The whole enterprise is soaked in that sparkly garishness that only a very young child — or possibly a tackiness-worshiping drag queen — might find pretty.

"Sometimes someone says something really small and it just fits into this empty place in your heart."

Oh my god. ABC now has full episodes of My So-Called Life online. If you can't sit down and watch them right this second, enjoy these quotes. There are no words for how much I loved that show.

"My parents keep asking how school was. It's like saying, "How was that drive-by shooting?" You don't care how it *was*, you're lucky to get out alive."

"It had become the focus of everything. It was all I could feel, all I could think about. It blotted out the rest of my face, the rest of my life. Like the zit had become... the truth about me."

"Sometimes I think if my mother wasn't so good at pretending to be happy she might be better at actually being happy."

"It just seems like, you agree to have a certain personality or something. For no reason. Just to make things easier for everyone. But when you think about it, I mean, how do you know it's even you?"

*sigh*

Obama: the Casting Director's Pick

I'm no political blogger, but I think Obama is going to win the presidency. Know why? Because it's good casting.

Okay, that sounds naiive. But think about it - if you were auditioning for the role of the American President, who would be the most compelling in the role? This exercise isn't about policy, politics, experience, or who is "best" for the job. But sheerly in terms of who you would cast in the role of Great American President, admit it - it's Obama. Edwards is too pretty, too soft, not grounded and solid enough. Clinton isn't quite right - she's powerful, but doesn't inspire the right kind of confidence. You might want to love her, but it's not easy or natural. The republicans all look like washed up jerks, not inspiring leaders. If the presidency was a casting project, Obama would get the first offer.

The thing is, policy, issues, experience, of course they matter. But I think that Americans look at politics through the prism of the entertainment industry, and American Idol is where we live now. And as optimistic as I'd like to be about the American public, I think the judgement of who to vote for is a lot more about that first snap judgement (the casting decision) than we'd like to believe. Do I trust this person? Do they seem ready to lead? I'm betting these questions have waaay more weight in the rest of the country than we oh-so-informed New Yorkers want to believe.

Not to mention, the guy's got Oprah on his side, and that really never fails.

Happy New Year!

I like this photo of Gene Kelly. I also like this quote:

"We spend January 1st walking through our lives, room by room, drawing up a list of work to be done, cracks to be patched. Maybe this year, to balance the list, we ought to walk through the rooms of our lives... not looking for flaws, but for potential."
