Sundance: "Passing Strange Soars"

Film.com gives Spike Lee's Passing Strange film a solid A, calling it "a beautiful effort".

"Going to see this will be like heading to Broadway for a night. Spike Lee, to his credit, realized the beauty of the musical was right there on stage, no further tinkering needed. Spike used 14 cameras at once to capture a musical like it's never been done before."
If it's really this good, perhaps we can hope not only for greater success for the Passing Strange film, but also for a new appreciation for filmed musicals. Broadway prices are outrageous, and it would be so great if those who can't afford it or can't get to New York were given the chance to enjoy more fierce Broadway entertainment.

Finally, something in films to make me feel happy.

I'm gathering that this will be like PBS' Great Performances, but better and you have to pay for it.

And probably uncensored

I really hope this gets some sort of theatrical screening in New York, if only a week or something at the Sunshine. It needs to be seen large, with a group. David Carr and Hollywood Reporter are also very positive: http://carpetbagger.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/01/17/the-bagger-at-sundance-hes-gotta-have-it/

Yes, a souped-up Great Performances is exactly what I'm picturing. Love that these reviews are so positive - let's just hope that it will find distribution in this crap economy. Sunshine would be great, as would Cinema Village - they had great success with the musical WERE THE WORLD MINE this winter, so maybe they'll try it again.
