SuckWatch: The Tony Awards

You know what sucks? The fact that Legally Blonde will be performing at the Tonys this Sunday sucks. It sucks that fluffy shows, shows that have been around for years, are getting substantial airtime when THIS YEAR'S nominees for awards like, oh, Best Revival of a Play aren't included in the broadcast at all.

Seriously?!??

Yes, seriously - awards for the design of Lighting, Costumes, and Sets, not to mention Choreography, and Book of a Musical will not be seen on CBS this Sunday. Instead, we'll be watching tired-ass numbers from Jersey Boys, Mamma Mia!, and Legally Fucking Blonde.

It's a disgrace. If it has to be moved to PBS in order to do the thing right, then for god's sake do it already. Don't let Les Moonves determine the proceedings of the biggest night in theater. Until then, Tony Awards, you're on SuckWatch.

Update: Kevin Spacey writes on twitter that "Tony Awards have reconsidered and Best Play Revival will now be on the telecast on CBS." Good.

I addressed this on my blog. I personally think that everyone displeased by this should not watch the Tony Awards simply so it can get on PBS quicker.

I also think it's strange that they're not showing the award for Best Revival of a Play when most of the the shows on Broadway this season were REVIVALS OF PLAYS.

It makes me miss last year's Tony Awards. In Iowa there was flood coverage that seemed to be conveniently placed during the broadcast. Sadly, I won't have that interrupting "Legally Blond." Or any of the other shows' performances.

Right On, Mox! And PBS is the best!

I'm Gus23, and I approve this message.

Good job re-spewing Michael Reidel's column.

Yes, yes, of course Reidel covered this first. What is this, a one-bitchy-queen town or something?

Monica, the only thing that pains me about the idea of PBS (which I DO endorse, but with reservations) is that people in the rest of America won't be as exposed to all that Broadway has to offer. People come to NYC and see that show that looked great on the Tonys, and on PBS, I worry about that scenario becoming less prevalent.

Regardless, and I love Neil Patrick Harris but still, SuckWatch.

Moxie, I do see your point. I even sit at home and think, "Wow, that show looks interesting. I'll have to remember to go see it." Thank you.

On a sidenote, what has put the Tony Awards on SuckWatch (are they going to still have the musical performances and have the awards for Best Book of a Musical and Best Revival of a Play presented?) is being pushed in an ad I saw in this morning's USA Today.
