Riedel Rags on Ragtime
Michael Riedel has some not-so-nice things to say about the Broadway revival of Ragtime, which is set to close on Sunday. I wanted so, so badly to love this production, but it's hard to disagree with much of what Michael Riedel says (aside from calling the cast Maryland locals, which is untrue and just mean). In spite of the ways that Ragtime failed to be what many of us had hoped for, there is one silver lining:
At least cute little Bobby Steggert got something out of this disaster. As Mother's Younger Brother -- a character name that's as bloated and pretentious as the show itself -- he caught the eye of a Times reporter, who gushed that the actor has "career breakout potential."
True dat. If Bobby Steggert doesn't get a tony nomination, I will eat my playbill.

I will give it to you that his acting is the best I've seen in that role, but the way he sang bothered me to no end.
I liked everything about his performance, best part of the show.
I liked Bobby Steggert, too. I'd seen him previously in 110 in the Shade, playing Audra McDonald's younger brother, and he was great.
Yeah, I agree the Riedel column was unnecessarily snarky. But like you, as much as I wanted to fall in love with this production, I just couldn't.
I read the book when it first came out and I've seen the movie so there were no surprises. Maybe that was part of the problem for me.
I also hated the car and didn't feel like we spent enough time really getting to know the characters, especially Coalhouse and Sarah.
OTOH, I love the music and the opening scene and I am glad I saw it. For some reason, it just didn't make as deep an emotional connection as I thought it would.
Riedel, Moxie. It's spelled riedel.
Thanks Seth - I even checked on the name spelling, long day.
